Big Band in the Park

In partnership with The Friends of Nonsuch, Nonsuch Rotary organises a Big Band Concert in the gardens of Nonsuch Mansion House. Held in June this event attracts many local residents for a very pleasant evening out whilst raising funds for The Friends of Nonsuch and Rotary charities.

Christmas Collection

Father Christmas on his sleigh!

Every December Nonsuch Rotary’s sleigh carries Father Christmas around the streets of Worcester Park, Cheam and Stoneleigh as well as visiting local supermarkets at the weekend.

As well as bringing pleasure to the children (and many adults!) in the area, this is the Club’s major fund raising events supporting a range of local charities.

Swimathon

Every November Nonsuch Rotary organises a Swimathon event which is held at Legal & General's swimming pool at their Kingswood offices. A swimathon is a sponsored swim that raises money for good causes.

Taking place on a Saturday, the Nonsuch Rotary Swimathon helps local organisations (such as schools, brownies and guides and local charities) to raise funds for their own organisation as well as for The Children's Trust at Tadworth Court and Rotary charities. Funds raised from the event are split between the swimming team, The Children's Trust and Rotary.

New teams are very welcome. There is no requirement to swim any particular distance so all levels of swimmers can participate. To find out more or to book a place contact Terry Mayho (tel: 020 8393 8556 email: nonsuchswim@aol.com).

The 2009 Swimathon will be held on Saturday 8th November.

Bizz Quizz

Bizz Quizz is a new project. We are organising a quiz open to local companies and organisations in the area. Teams will compete for the Bizz Quizz trophy and help raise funds for The Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children’s Neo Natal Unit appeal.

We hope that this will become an annual event that will stimulate communication between local organisations, help the local community and increase the visibility and understanding of Rotary in our area.

CATS

CATS stands for Carers Assistance Teams. We provide a very important support service to our local Carers Centre helping individuals to complete application forms for carers allowance, attendance allowance and disability living allowance.

The forms are very complex and daunting to complete but we provide a fortnightly service at the Carers Centre to help potential applicants complete the documentation.

All this costs us is our time but is much appreciated be those we help who might give up if they had to complete these complex forms by themselves.

There are many other projects that we are involved with. We support Stroke Awareness Day – encouraging people to check their blood pressure. We take the old and young in need of a break out for the day and have recently helped a local school to create a new nature garden.

In additional to local activities, Rotary is well known for its international work and Sutton Nonsuch Rotary Club also supports international as well as local initiatives

Shelter Boxes

Unfortunately there always seems to be a major disaster somewhere in the world. We see the pictures of suffering and despair on our television news – we want to provide aid but how can we be sure that donations actually reach the people in need?

A very practical solution developed by Rotary is the Shelter Box. Rather than send money that may get delayed, lost or misdirected the Rotary Shelter Box is a very practical resource or channelling assistance to where it’s needed.

Developed by Tom Henderson and the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard, a Shelter Box is simply a large plastic box containing a tent, ten sleeping bags and a set of useful tools and equipment. Over the years literally hundreds of shelter boxes have been sent to disaster areas throughout the world.

Shelter Boxes arriving in Kashmir

Following the Tsunami Disaster, Nonsuch High School collected £5,000 that was donated to the club to purchase ten shelter boxes. These boxes went to Pakistan to help 100 victims of the Kashmir earthquake.
