Sixteen year old Daisy Daly, a student currently pursuing a Chef’s Diploma NVQ level 2 course at Carshalton College, wowed the judges at the recent local heat of the Rotary Young Chef competition when she produced ” an especially well presented” three course meal for two to win against fierce competition from five other competitors. She is in her first year at the College having recently left Carshalton High School for Girls.

The two Judges, Garry Lee who is Head Chef at the Ivy Restaurant, London and Tom Hall, Team Leader at Carshalton College, commented that, “The taste and quality of Daisy’s cooking was outstanding.”

All the competitors had to prepare a three course meal within two hours on a budget of £14. Daisy, who hopes to reach the national final at Chippenham in April, prepared a pan fried spicy sea bass with fondant potoes and fresh pesto as her main course.

Second place was awarded to 15 year old Charlie King from Cheam High School while Megan Jenkins, who is only 11, came third; she is also from Carshalton High School for Girls.

Four thousand young people under 17 years embarked at the outset on this Rotary competition, which is jointly sponsored by Filippo Berio, producers of olive oil, and Fifteen Restaurant, London. The winner receives a trip for two to Filippo Berio’s olive groves in Tuscanny and one day session in the kitchens of the Fifteen Retaurant.

Nonsuch Rotary Club would like to warmly thank all those residents of Cheam, North Cheam, Sutton and Worcester Park who gave so generously to support local charities during Santa’s tour of local streets just before Christmas. We’d also like to express our sincere thanks to the Managers and staff of Sainsbury’s and Tesco Extra Sutton/North Cheam for allowing us to collect outside their stores at the weekends.

A magnificent £9,100 was collected and distributed to local charities Conquest Art, Diabetes UK (South East), Epsom Riding for the Disabled, Family Focus and T.R.E.E.S (supporting local people with learning difficulties) as well as Nonsuch Rotary’s local charity fund.

Cheques were presented to representatives of the charities at Nonsuch Rotary Club’s meeting on 20th January. The photograph below shows President John Chamberlain with (from left to right) Paul Jansen from Family Focus, Penny January from Diabetes UK South East, Stella Miln from Epsom Riding for the Disabled and Laurie Wills from TREES.

The Friends of Nonsuch and Nonsuch Rotary Club will be holding our next ‘Big Band in Nonsuch Park’ charity event on Friday evening 4 June 2010 in the delightful gardens of Nonsuch Mansion, close to Cheam Village.  Gates will be open for picnickers from 5.30 pm and the main concert will begin at 7.15 pm

By popular request, following his welcome first appearance at Nonsuch in 2009, Jay Craig and his Orchestra will return for the 2010 concert.

Tickets will be £17 on the gate but there will be savings of £3.00 per ticket for early booking – only £14 if purchased in before the evening.

We were delighted that no fewer than 19 local companies supported this community event in 2009, contributing over £4,000 through either sponsorship or purchasing advertising space in our free programme.  Others donated excellent prizes for the raffle which raised £1,845.  We are grateful to everyone concerned

A crowd of nearly 900 enjoyed last June’s event which raised over £8,800 for the charity funds of the Friends and Nonsuch Rotary.  Money raised for the Friends enable them to continue their work on the Mansion Museum.  Among the beneficiaries from the Nonsuch Rotary charity funds were the Macmillan Butterfly Centre which does such magnificent work for the support of people suffering from cancer and their families.

The organisers are delighted that the Sutton Guardian and the Epsom Guardian have agreed to be our Media Partners for 2010.

More details, including booking forms for downloading and box office information, will be available on this website from about the beginning of March 2010.
