Chris Forkan was installed as our new President on the 6 July for the Rotary year of 2011/2012. He is a founder member, has a Paul Harris Fellow which was awarded to him in 2009 for his outstanding work within and without the club and is greatly respected by the members. Below is a short report on his achievements.

What has Chris to do with Rotary’s national ‘Young Chef’, ‘Youth Speaks’ and ‘Young Leaders’ initiatives?

For several years Chris has led the Club’s highly successful programme enabling many local young people to benefit enormously from participation in these events.

Past President Mick installing President Chris

Chris, a founder member of the Club 25 years ago, has embarked on leading the whole Club in what he confidently expects will be another highly successful year in succession to Mick Martin. “We pride ourselves on being extremely active in local and community initiatives and having a great time while doing so”.

Non-Rotarians don’t know what they are missing and I urge them to find out by visiting us at Club on a Wednesday evening where they will receive a very warm welcome.

Chris, who began his career as a history teacher, has a wide range of interests including, in recent years, acting as volunteer organiser and guide for his own very popular trips to battlefields in Europe. He is absolutely clear that his year as leader of Nonsuch Rotary Club will be free of any battle fields!

Our Swimathon helps local organisations and charities to raise funds for their own purposes as well as supporting a Rotary charity, this year it will be ‘BBC’s Children In Need’. We have aways been well supported by local schools such as Rosebery School in Epsom and Nonsuch High School in Cheam but any local group/company interested in raising funds for charity or their own Club is welcome to enter one or more teams.

Nonsuch Rotary, under the leadership of Colin Kennedy, who organises the event and the proceeds from sponsorship are split 50/50 between the teams and ‘BBC’s Children In Need’.

Nonsuch Rotary provides all the documentation including sponsorship and disclaimer forms and a certificate upon completion of the swim. Free refreshments are available to the swimmers following their swim.

A project started in 2001 has so far netted tens of thousands of pounds for local carers. A ten-year partnership between Sutton Carers’ Centre and Nonsuch Rotary Club was celebrated at a Mayor of Sutton’s fund-raising dinner at the Club during which Sean Duggan of the Guardian beguiled the guests with a thought-provoking and entertaining talk about developments in the general local newspaper scene.

Eddie Parsons (former Deputy Manager) told the guests, “In 2000 Marian Radford (the then Sutton Carers’ Centre Manager) and I were considering the best way of taking-up Nonsuch Rotary’s offer of hands-on help for the Centre and decided to ask the Club to assist carers in completing the lengthy application forms for attendance allowance and disability living allowance. Marian came up with name, the Carers’ Assistance Team and so, in 2001 after I had trained six volunteers from the Rotary Club, CATs was born”

CATs currently has 13 Nonsuch Rotary volunteers. Rachael MacLeod (the current CEO at the Centre) said that the project had been so successful that, in co-operation with Nonsuch Rotary Club, “We’d now like to extend the project to include all the Rotary Clubs in the Borough of Sutton. I would also be willing to offer my advice to any Rotary Clubs in the adjoining boroughs of Epsom and Banstead who would like to consider setting up something similar”

Celebrating 25 Years Serving the Community – and Having Fun!

President Mick Martin led members of the Nonsuch Rotary Club and their families on a long, sunny weekend at Bournemouth in April 2011 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Club receiving its Rotary charter. The sign on the wall behind the picture shows that members have not forgotten how to enjoy themselves! And the Club’s many achievements for local and international communities over the 25 years is evidence of their commitment to the Rotary slogan, ‘Service above Self’, as can be seen from examples elsewhere on this website. Not only has the Club raised tens of thousands of pounds for charities at home and abroad but it has also organised numerous projects for the benefit of children, teenagers, older people and carers, among others, and continues to do so. And it has played its full part in Rotary International’s drive to eliminate polio disease world-wide.

As everyone left, Mick’s parting words were, ‘I hope you all enjoyed the weekend’ , to which the response from all was, ‘It was great – and laying on such beautiful weather was a master stroke’!

Ian Hosking, the Nonsuch Rotarian who last month found himself catapulted from car park attendant to Judge of a National Rotary Young Chef competition at Carshalton College, this month was cooking single handed for 100 hungry quizzers. It was the occasion of Nonsuch Rotary Club’s fifth annual Bizz Quizz which raises money for the MacMillan Butterfly Centre and has become so popular with local businesses that, in the words of organiser Diego Alves, ’You probably couldn’t have squeezed one extra person in let alone another team!’

David Riley’s questions were, as usual, a mixture of the simple, less simple and downright unsimple, but hightly entertaining for all that. In a keenly fought battle, the Stuart Kings (Seeability) and the Sutton Strollers got their noses in front but the real winners were the Butterfly Centre who will benefit by over £700, all the contestants and the amateur Chef whose professionalism with the ingredients sent everyone away from the carpark fully satisfied. Roll on next February.

‘Look out Jamie and Nigella, the next generation of budding chefs from Sutton are on your tails!

Five finalists, aged 11 – 16, arrived at Carshalton College on a Saturday morning, each determined to win a place at Rotary International’s District Final of the Young Chef competition next month. Each of them brought £15 worth of ingredients in order to produce 3 dishes for two people in 2 hours in front of three expert judges. The finalists came from Carshalton College (2), Carshalton High School for Girls (1) and Cheam High School (2).

Aidan Brett (16) from Carshalton College was the overall winner. His mouth-watering menu consisted of:

Tempera of mussels with an asian dip

Rack of lamb and vegetables

Poached pears stuffed with Roquefort cheese.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Sutton Nonsuch and hosted by Carshalton College, the morning was hailed as a great success with all competitors reaching a high standard in their preparation, cooking and presentation. In the words of the judges, “Everyone was a winner”.

Experienced amateur chef Rotarian Ian Hosking arrived to act as car parking attendant but was pressed to join the two professionals on the judging panel. “I loved it”, he said afterwards. “The tasting was sublime. Congratulations to Aidan and everyone who took part as well as their parents and teachers.”

The photo shows the five Sutton finalists, left to right, Alexandra Ampofo (Carshalton High School for Girls), Daisy Daly and Aidan Brett (Carshalton College), Daniel Day and Lloyd Atkins (Cheam High School).

Aidan will compete at the District Final at Merton College on 12 February in the hope of reaching the British Isles Rotary Final which will be held on 30 April at Stratford on Avon College. The overall winner will receive £250, a day’s cooking tuition with Phil Thompson at Auberge du Lac and a trip to the Filippo Berio olive groves in Tuscany.

‘It was great!’ was their general reaction.

Afterwards everyone received a certificate from Nonsuch Rotary Club’s President, Mick Martin, recording their participation.

As Mick said later, ‘For a few of the swimmers this was the fifth year in a row they had taken part. We must be doing something right!’ Nonsuch Rotary Club has held a Swimathon every year since 1998 and in that time thousands of pounds have been raised for charities. This year’s swimmers will now be collecting their pledges with half the money raised going to their own nominated charities and the other half to Rotary charities.

Next year the Swimathon will be on 12 November 2011
