‘Look out Jamie and Nigella, the next generation of budding chefs from Sutton are on your tails!
Five finalists, aged 11 – 16, arrived at Carshalton College on a Saturday morning, each determined to win a place at Rotary International’s District Final of the Young Chef competition next month. Each of them brought £15 worth of ingredients in order to produce 3 dishes for two people in 2 hours in front of three expert judges. The finalists came from Carshalton College (2), Carshalton High School for Girls (1) and Cheam High School (2).
Aidan Brett (16) from Carshalton College was the overall winner. His mouth-watering menu consisted of:
Tempera of mussels with an asian dip
Rack of lamb and vegetables
Poached pears stuffed with Roquefort cheese.
Organised by the Rotary Club of Sutton Nonsuch and hosted by Carshalton College, the morning was hailed as a great success with all competitors reaching a high standard in their preparation, cooking and presentation. In the words of the judges, “Everyone was a winner”.
Experienced amateur chef Rotarian Ian Hosking arrived to act as car parking attendant but was pressed to join the two professionals on the judging panel. “I loved it”, he said afterwards. “The tasting was sublime. Congratulations to Aidan and everyone who took part as well as their parents and teachers.”
The photo shows the five Sutton finalists, left to right, Alexandra Ampofo (Carshalton High School for Girls), Daisy Daly and Aidan Brett (Carshalton College), Daniel Day and Lloyd Atkins (Cheam High School).
Aidan will compete at the District Final at Merton College on 12 February in the hope of reaching the British Isles Rotary Final which will be held on 30 April at Stratford on Avon College. The overall winner will receive £250, a day’s cooking tuition with Phil Thompson at Auberge du Lac and a trip to the Filippo Berio olive groves in Tuscany.

Most came from either Rosebery School, Epsom or Nonsuch School, Cheam.
‘It was great!’ was their general reaction.
Afterwards everyone received a certificate from Nonsuch Rotary Club’s President, Mick Martin, recording their participation.

As Mick said later, ‘For a few of the swimmers this was the fifth year in a row they had taken part. We must be doing something right!’ Nonsuch Rotary Club has held a Swimathon every year since 1998 and in that time thousands of pounds have been raised for charities. This year’s swimmers will now be collecting their pledges with half the money raised going to their own nominated charities and the other half to Rotary charities.
Next year the Swimathon will be on 12 November 2011

Nonsuch Rotary Stand at the Epsom & Ewell Nonsuch Park Awareness Day
The Awareness day is a community project organised by Epsom & Ewell Council to make the public aware of the community based organisations and services that are available in their area and various community projects that the Council are promoting.
Last year we helped with the organisation but this year we had a stand to promote Rotary and to talk to the public about what Rotary does in the community, besides raising funds for charities.

Big Band In The Park 2010
by David Hagger, Chair of Organising Committee
It was a dream come true! Friday 4 June 2010 was a beautiful, warm, early summer’s evening, the lawns in front of Nonsuch Mansion, Cheam were packed with picnickers enjoying a wonderful orchestra playing a wide range of popular Big Band music and watching the many who were tempted on to the grass to dance the night away.
Approaches to local businesses for sponsorship and for adverts in the free programme had earlier been made by members of Nonsuch Rotary Club and as a result support was given by no fewer than 20 local organisations – listed below.
Photographs are by Rotarian Rob Marvelly.
Richard Stevenson on classical guitar welcomed early arrivals to the 2010 Big Band event, organised by Nonsuch Rotary for the Friends of Nonsuch, before Jay Craig, his orchestra and vocalists, took over for the evening.
If the show proved a runaway success so did the finances! After all expenses the event raised £10,932 for charity, including an amazing £2,149 from the evening’s raffle – a Rotarian once again persuaded local businesses in Epsom generously to donate a range of very attractive prizes and the audience responded enthusiastically.
This £10,932 has been divided equally between Nonsuch Rotary Club and the Friends of Nonsuch, a registered charity which will use its share to continue work on the service wing and garden of the Mansion. One thousand, five hundred pounds of Nonsuch Rotary’s share has been given to the Cancer Information and Support Service at St Helier Hospital, via the Sutton Guardian’s Operation Butterfly appeal, and another £500 to the Macmillan Butterfly Centre at Epsom Hospital. The remainder of Nonsuch Rotary’s share will be distributed to other charities in the coming months.

Swimathon November 6 2010 at Epsom College

Our Swimathon helps local organisations and charities to raise funds for their own purposes as well as supporting a Rotary charity, this year it will be ‘BBC’s Children In Need’. We have aways been well supported by local schools such as Rosebery School in Epsom and Nonsuch High School in Cheam but any local group/company interested in raising funds for charity is welcome to enter one or more teams.
- The idea is simple. Teams collect sponsorship from friends, relatives and supporters for a 30 minute sponsored swim. Nonsuch Rotary, under the leadership of Colin Kennedy, who organises the event and the proceeds from sponsorship are split 50/50 between the teams and ‘BBC’s Children In Need’.
- Nonsuch Rotary provides all the documentation including sponsorship and disclaimer forms and a certificate upon completion of the swim. Free refreshments are available to the swimmers following their swim.
Forms are available for download via the links below or contact Colin Kennedy for further information on 01737 243509 or email nonsuchswim@aol.

YOUTH SPEAKS 2010
In congratulating the 21 competitors at Nonsuch Rotary’s recent Youth Speaks competition, Chris Forkan told them, “It was appropriate that one of the topics chosen tonight was ‘Courage’ because that is what it took from all of you to stand and deliver in front of the public and your peers and to do it so well.” Appropriately, it was the winning team from Wilson’s School, Delwyn the speaker, Bramam the Chair and Fanuel Vote of Thanks who chose to speak about ‘Courage’. Afterwards members of the winning team said how much they enjoyed hearing the other teams and their topics which they found really interesting.
‘Rotary Youth Speaks’ is a popular annual event which gives youngsters an opportunity to display their public speaking skills in front of an audience, in competition with students from other local schools
